How much does a website cost in Tasmania?

Updated October 2026. Real numbers, including the running costs nobody mentions.

Short answer: a small business website in Tasmania costs anywhere from about $25 a month if you build it yourself, to $1,500–$5,000 with a freelancer, to $10,000 and up with an agency. Then there are running costs most people forget about.

Here's what each option gets you, written by someone who sells websites, so take my bias into account. I've tried to be fair.

Option 1: build it yourself

Wix, Squarespace and similar builders cost roughly $25–$60 a month in Australian dollars, depending on the plan and whether you take an online store.

Good for: people who enjoy fiddling, have time, and need something up this week.

The catch: the template is the easy bit. Writing words that make people call, getting found on Google, and making it fast on a phone are where most DIY sites stall. Over three years you'll also pay $900–$2,000 in subscription fees, and you never own the site.

Option 2: a local freelancer

Most North West and Tasmanian freelancers charge somewhere around $1,500–$5,000 for a small business site, depending on pages and features.

Good for: most small businesses. You get a custom site and one person to deal with.

The catch: quality varies a lot. Ask to see sites they've built, run them through a speed test, and ask who owns the domain. If the answer is "me", walk away.

Option 3: an agency

Agencies in Hobart, Launceston and the mainland typically start around $8,000–$15,000 and go up fast.

Good for: bigger businesses that need branding, strategy, custom systems and a team.

The catch: you're paying for the team, the office and the process. A café or a plumber rarely needs that.

Five questions to ask any web designer

  1. Who owns the domain? It should be you, in your business name.
  2. Can I see three sites you've built? Then test them on your phone.
  3. What happens if I leave? You should get everything, without a fight.
  4. What does it cost per year after launch? Get it in writing.
  5. Who actually does the work? Some "local" designers send it overseas.
